TRUST PA HISTORY AND PROGRESS

After we lost Paul-Andre, it became apparent that his friends had raised a few thousand pounds towards his expected ongoing care. As PA had wanted to be part of the clinical trials himself it seemed appropriate to use the money already raised to positively help others with a spinal cord injury like PA, so we set up our charity Trust PA in his memory.

Please consider this: The horrifying fact is that spinal cord injury can happen to anyone very easily during normal everyday activities – it happened to PA. Every day in the UK, another four people are involved in accidents which result in paralysing injury and the average age is only 19. They will spend the rest of their normal life span, paralysed and in a wheel chair unless we continue the funding for the clinical trials so that repair treatments can be made available for everyone as soon as possible in NHS hospitals.

Our Mission:
Trust PA - helping spinally injured people by relieving their difficulties and aiding their recovery. We do this by helping to fund the clinical trials (testing) of safe treatments for the repair of spinal cord injury paralysis.

Why is spinal injury such a problem?
At the point of injury, the brain becomes disconnected from the spinal cord, due to destruction of those nerve fibres which convey sensory input from the body to the brain. The devastating effects of this can be loss of; breathing, control of movement, sensation, bladder, bowels, sexual function, blood pressure and body temperature.

We have spoken to many spinal cord injured (SCI) people, and in every case they said that many welfare facilities exist to help relieve their day-to-day problems but what they really need, is someone to fix the problem so that they can return to a normal life. So, knowing that was also what P-A wanted Trust PA was set up and works to continue funding the Clinical Trials Initiative exclusively, in Paul-André / P-A’s memory.

The progress to date: a “clinical toolkit” has now been developed to enable measurement of the smallest improvement in sensation and movement, following curative treatment. At a number of centres, work is being done on several pioneering studies using volunteer subjects to progress towards and enable the final stage of the project to enhance the most promising results. Amongst these, is the adult olfactory stem cell, ideally from the patient’s own nose, (our sense of smell) which has become one of the possible routes of repair. In the future, these results will improve the lives of paralysed men, women and children and their families. A small improvement can make a huge difference to an injured person’s life.
By helping Trust PA in any way, you can ensure this important goal happens as soon as possible.

Trust PA on track to the solution: -
Since Charitable status was granted by the Charities Commission in 2002 we have annually made donations to Spinal Research to keep funding the clinical trials (testing) of safe new therapies to eventually end paralysis. We are very pleased that Trust PA has maintained annual donations of at least £50,000 to help this vital programme to continue.
Spinal Research has an eminent scientific team of specialists who monitor progress of the ongoing trials and only direct funds to the most beneficial projects which are targeted towards making treatments available in NHS Hospitals as soon as possible. The picture below shows Mr Jonathan Miall CEO for Spinal Research, receiving a publicly donated cheque at one of our annual Trust PA Charity Balls from Trustee Dr Alastair Kerr.

All of our money has been raised by a huge group of friends, supporters, companies and family. Some who were lifelong friends of P-A, some who met him later, and others who have simply seen the website or heard his story and were moved to do something. People have climbed mountains, run marathons or others more simple things, but all adding up to a very worthwhile cash flow to provide positive support for this venture. We know P-A would be pleased and proud to see people supporting Trust PA to help see an end to the permanence of paralysis in the future. We can’t stop accidents happening - but we can keep helping to fund the solution. Together we can make a real difference to the lives of many men, women, children and their families, by helping to win the fight against lifelong paralysis.

At Trust PA we have no employees or paid staff and keep all costs
to a minimum so
that every penny donated,
can go directly to fund the trials.
