Start time
The half marathon starts at 11.00am (wheelchair start at 10.55am), and the fun run at 11.20am Sunday 15th March 2009

Course Description
The Bath Half is a fast flat course, straddling both sides of the river Avon and avoiding all the hills surrounding the City. It is an 'honest' two-lap course with proven PB criteria, entirely traffic & parking free. Even at the front end you'll have plenty of company to pull you round for a good time

The race definitely has the 'Big City' feel, starting & finishing at the same point in Great Pulteney Street - with a roadway spanning 46 feet - one of the widest Georgian boulevards in Europe. The first mile is gently downhill down Pulteney Road to Churchill Bridge, so resist all temptations to go off too fast. You then follow two identical laps from Churchill Bridge (the most crowded spot for spectators on the course), gently rising up past Green Park Station, a gentle 'pull' round Queen Square, then down Charlotte Street and out along the Upper Bristol Road, gently undulating along Newbridge Road, and a longer 'pull' up to the 'New Bridge' at the beginning of the dual carriageway. From here the race heads back towards the City centre, pancake flat along Lower Bristol Road, before crossing over Churchill Bridge and up Green Park again for the beginning of the second lap. At the end of the second lap the runners pass across Churchill Bridge, finally rising gently (but remorselessly!) up Pulteney Road all the way to the finish with a dramatic last 200 metres in Great Pulteney Street

Course Route Changes
The course route is unchanged since 2006. The race goes right round Queen Square both laps (it used to go down Monmouth Place on the second lap). The race now goes straight along Newbridge Road and Lower Bristol Road (omitting the 'loop' through the housing estate at Rudmore Park, and the gyratory around Pinesway).

The current course is close to the original course used in early years of the race. It was  remeasured in 2006 by IAAF official course measurer Hugh Jones with a new certificate of accuracy. Hugh described the course as 'officially flat, with three undulations'! The amendments were introduced to make the course run faster, whilst reducing congestion at the 'pinch points' at Rudmore Park and Pinesway. They also introduced a fantastic viewing spot for spectators at Queen Square. In 2008 an optional extra loop was added to the course to cater for runners training for the Flora London Marathon requiring an 18 mile run rather than the traditional 13.1 miles.

The Start
For the sake of safety, access points to the start area are controlled by event stewards and security staff.  Please remember your race number - you won't be allowed into the start area without it. We trialled colour-coded start groups last year, and, with a few improvements, will be using a similar system for the 2009 event.
Green Start: for our slightly slower runners.  Your race number will have a green band on it. Entry to the Green Start area will be at the Laura Place fountain (you will leave the Runners Village via the rugby club's Riverside Gate).  Please note: Green Starters will not be allowed in the White Start area
White Start: for those faster runners amongst you.  You will have white-banded race numbers and will enter the White Start area from the middle of the start area at William Street (using the Lower Gate from the Runners Village).  White-banded runners will be able to enter through the Green Start area to allow you to accompany green-banded friends or family to the start.

Toilets & Drink Stations
Toilets are provided at all first aid posts (spaced one mile apart) and at all drinks stations.  There are obviously also Toilets in the Runners Village and at the Start - these can get very busy at the start of the race. Drinks are provided as follows:

Mile Markers
We cover all eventualities by spray-painting exact mile markers on the road, but to help with visibility also fix signs on the nearest lamp post (although obviously these can be several metres away from the mile mark itself!)

Medical Provision
The Bath Half has some of the most comprehensive medical facilities of any road race in the UK.  St John Ambulance first aid posts are provided at 1/2 mile intervals around the course, linked by radios to on-course teams of mobile paramedics, race doctors and ambulances, under the supervision of our medical director Constantin Jabarin, a registrar in emergency medicine at Bath Royal United Hospital. A primary medical station for more serious cases is provided within the finish area, with a secondary first aid treatment facility on the Recreation Ground for the less serious 'walking wounded'. Runners dropping out on the course will be offered a lift from the nearest first aid post back to the finish by courtesy minibus.

The Finish
Runners finish in Great Pulteney Street and can pick up their well-deserved free Goody Bag around the corner in William Street.  We aim to publish official finishing times within 24hrs of the event on this site.

Pre and Post Race Massages
A team of sports physios and masseurs based in the Runners Village will be offering competitors pre and post race massages.
